Multimodal analgesia describes the practice of combining multiple analgesic drugs or techniques, with the goal of targeting different points along the pain pathway.Combining analgesic drugs from different classes typically allows the dosage of each drug to be reduced, providing better pain control with fewer side effects.
Adding non-pharmaceutical interventions can further decrease required drug dosages while contributing to improved patient outcomes.

When you encounter a pet in pain, consider whether a multimodal approach may be appropriate. While an NSAID may be the first treatment that pops into your head, take a couple of minutes to ask yourself whether there may be additional medications or non-pharmaceutical treatments that would also benefit the patient.
By doing so, you may be able to improve your patient’s pain control while also decreasing the risk of undesirable side effects.
