A Vet Student’s Guide to Small Animal CPR
When an animal crashes and we perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), it’s an all hands-on-deck, high stakes moment. If we are unable to successfully bring that pet back and discharge them to their owners, we may feel like we have failed.
In reality, however, we’re in good company in our “failure.” In veterinary patients (and, to a lesser extent, in human patients), the unfortunate reality is that CPR is rarely successful.
The RECOVER guidelines are divided into 5 separate domains:
- Preparedness and prevention
- Basic life support
- Advanced life support
- Monitoring
- Post cardiac arrest care
